When the Rhode Island Construction Training Academy (RICTA) approached me to create a dynamic video for their student orientation, it was clear that the project needed to go beyond the traditional slideshow or PowerPoint. Their Director of Training, Kristen Brescia, was looking for something engaging—something that would capture and hold the attention of incoming students as they embarked on their journey in the construction trades.

Located in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, just minutes from Providence, RICTA provides specialized training across nine career paths in construction, and we collaborated to produce a captivating ten-minute video designed specifically for student orientation. This video has since become a key feature on their website, offering a vibrant introduction to the academy for prospective students and their families.

A Customized, Human Approach

We began by filming several classes in action, aiming to bring the learning experience to life. Instead of relying solely on generic stock footage, we captured authentic classroom scenes where students engaged in hands-on demos, lively lectures, and real-world applications of construction skills. Myself and my assistant filmed students listening to instructors and actively working on practical tasks, showcasing the hands-on experience that RICTA is known for.

We also carefully selected relevant stock footage that resonated with the skills these students would use after graduation, ensuring the final product felt professional yet authentic without the overly staged feel often seen in stock imagery.

Creating the Voice and Message

A key element of the project was the voiceover. Kristen and I spent several weeks collaborating on the script to ensure it truly conveyed RICTA’s mission—to train the next generation of construction professionals. The final product featured a professional voiceover that perfectly complemented the video, guiding viewers with clarity and precision.

A Dual-Purpose Video

In addition to the ten-minute orientation video, we recognized the potential to expand its use. A shorter version was created for RICTA’s homepage, serving as an essential tool for student recruitment. This condensed version highlights the academy’s offerings, giving prospective students a compelling glimpse of the hands-on education RICTA provides.

Why Video Works for Higher Education and Corporate Communications

In today’s competitive environment, high-quality video content is critical for engaging and retaining the attention of viewers, particularly in industries like construction where practical skills are paramount. Whether it’s for education, recruitment, or corporate communications, video enhances engagement, aids information retention, and leaves a lasting impression. RICTA’s orientation video is a perfect example of how custom-tailored content, coupled with the right messaging and visuals, can elevate an institution’s appeal and outreach.

As a Rhode Island-based video production company specializing in industry training videos, corporate communications, and educational video content, I take pride in creating content that not only informs but also inspires. RICTA’s project is just one of many examples of how a thoughtfully produced video can transform a simple presentation into an engaging and impactful experience.
