Behind the Lens and In Front of It: Releasing My Demo Reel Video
After years of telling other people’s stories through my lens, it’s finally time to share my own. I’ve always felt more comfortable behind the camera, capturing the essence of others, but being in front of it? That’s been a challenge.
Years ago, I recognized my fear of public speaking and decided to join Toastmasters. This was sparked by being asked to speak about my REVEALED project, which pushed me out of my comfort zone. Over time and with practice, I got better at presenting, both in front of live crowds and on video.
Overcoming the Fear
Public speaking and being on camera never came naturally to me. Remembering lines has always been a challenge, which is why for this video, I created a script and used a teleprompter. This helped me stay focused and convey my message clearly. For this project, I stepped up, alongside my assistant, as the subject, camera operator, sound engineer, producer, and director. Wearing all these hats reminds me of the importance of having a team behind the scenes. My assistant’s outside perspective allowed a critical review of how I delivered my message, ensuring it was on point.
Getting Technical
I wanted this video to reflect the professional quality I provide for my clients. Rather than creating a short-form video with an iPhone, I opted for my video camera to ensure high-quality video. The video features a mix of recent projects—both photographs and video clips—that represent the full range of services Indermaur Media offers.
Why This Video Matters
One thing I’ve learned through this process is how much better I’ve become as a storyteller and media producer by being the subject myself. It’s a different experience being in front of the camera, lights, and teleprompter, compared to directing or being part of the crew behind the scenes. Experiencing both sides has given me a deeper understanding of how to make my subjects comfortable and help them shine.
Releasing this bio video is not just about promoting my services; it’s a reflection of my journey. From overcoming my fear of public speaking to stepping in front of the camera, this video shows my growth as a professional. It’s a personal piece that I hope it resonates with those who are looking for someone who truly understands the power of storytelling.
